The Sneaker I Waited Years to Buy
I’ve been putting off buying Adidas Superstars for a long time. Not because I didn’t want them. I did. But I refused to buy them just to buy them. If I was going to own this silhouette, it had to mean something. So I waited. And then Adidas dropped a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collab, and the wait ended.
This is Culture Kicks Episode 3 on FilmyFool, and this one genuinely earned its place in the series.
The Packaging Alone Tells You Everything
Before you even get to the shoe, the box makes a statement. It’s designed as a direct homage to the old TMNT action figure packaging, the kind that came in those blister packs kids would stare at in toy shops. That’s not an accident. Adidas and the TMNT team clearly understood the brief: this isn’t just a sneaker release. It’s a tribute to a franchise that shaped a generation.
Inside the box, alongside the shoes, there’s a reprint of the very first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book, the original Eastman and Laird run from 1984. If you didn’t already know, that first issue featured all four turtles wearing the same red mask. There were no colour-coded bandanas yet. And that’s exactly what this shoe pays tribute to.
The Detail on This Shoe Is Exceptional
The colourway is green and red, deliberately so. But look closer and the references go much deeper. The shell toe, which is a signature feature of the Adidas Superstar silhouette, has been reimagined with lines that echo the texture of a turtle’s shell. It’s subtle, but once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
The tongue of the shoe has “Ninja Power” printed on the inside. The insoles are pizza-printed. Pizza. On the insoles. That’s the kind of detail that separates a good collab from a great one. The people making it clearly grew up with this franchise and gave a damn.
Additionally, the shoe comes with extra laces, white by default, plus red and black alternatives. You also get an extra pair of masks and individual initials for each turtle: Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael. The complete roster, all accounted for.
Choosing Your Turtle Says More Than You Think
Ask anyone who grew up with TMNT and they’ll tell you which turtle they loved most. For me, it was Michelangelo, no contest. He was the coolest, the most fun, the most effortlessly likeable. Leonardo came second because of his leadership. Donatello for the brains.
However, somewhere between childhood and now, that changed. As an adult, I relate most to Raphael. The unrestrained aggression. The unfiltered honesty. The refusal to pretend. Raf says what he thinks, charges ahead, and doesn’t particularly care who that bothers. There’s something to be said for that kind of single-minded clarity. He’d be annoyed that I listed him last, which, honestly, tracks.

Why This Collab Works
A lot of brand collabs miss. They slap a logo on an existing product, charge more for it, and call it culture. This one doesn’t do that. Because of this, it stands out. The shell detail, the pizza insoles, the comic reprint in the box, the mask accessories, the turtle initials, every element earns its place. Nothing feels like it was added to hit a quota.
This was also my first pair of Superstars. I’d been avoiding the silhouette for years while waiting for the right version. If you’re going to own an iconic shoe, the first one should mean something. In contrast to buying the standard colourway just because it’s available, waiting for a collab like this makes the ownership feel earned.
As a result, this shoe sits differently in the collection, not just as a sneaker, but as a piece of pop-culture history.
Where It Lives in the Collection
The TMNT shelf at FilmyFool HQ already had a solid lineup before this arrived. Adding these Superstars to it felt like a natural conclusion to something that’s been building for a while. This is what Culture Kicks is about, sneakers that aren’t just footwear, but entry points into the franchises, stories, and characters that shaped how a generation sees the world.
That said, if you’re new here: FilmyFool isn’t just sneakers. It’s film reviews, series breakdowns, book reviews, comic deep-dives, and collectible coverage. Everything pop culture, nothing half-hearted.
For more sneaker content with actual cultural context, check out the earlier episodes of Culture Kicks on filmyfool.com. If you’re a TMNT fan, the comic and collectibles coverage on the site will be worth your time too. And if animated films are your thing, the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse breakdown is a good companion piece to this one.
Final Word
The Adidas x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Superstars collab is exactly what a pop-culture sneaker collaboration should be. It respects the source material, rewards the fans who look closely, and delivers a shoe that earns its price without relying on hype alone.
For this reason, it’s one of the most considered purchases in the collection. If you missed it, keep an eye on the resale market. It’s worth finding.
