Stop what you are doing and go read the Bloodsworn Saga. All three books. This is one of the most gripping fantasy trilogies I have read in a very long time.
John Gwynne builds a world of Norse mythology and brutal, beautifully structured conflict. These books have everything: genuine character development across the trilogy, battle sequences written with real craft, and an emotional core that earns its payoffs rather than demanding them. The Bloodsworn are a warband worth investing in completely. The villains are threatening and credible. The world-building never overwhelms the human story at the centre of it all.
If you love fantasy and you have not read this series, you are genuinely missing something. John Gwynne deserves to be in conversations alongside the biggest names in the genre. Start with Book 1, The Shadow of the Gods. You will not need any convincing to pick up the second.
