Anil Kapoor is nearly 70. And he is doing THIS in Subedar. Let that sink in.
This is an action-packed masala entertainer and it hits the spot. Subedar takes the familiar action film blueprint, puts it in a setting Indians can relate to, and executes it with real confidence. Think Manoj Bajpayee-era gritty action, but grounded. Anil Kapoor as Subedar Arjun Moria is absolutely pitch perfect from scene one to the last frame. The commitment, the physicality, the layers of emotion. Unbelievable at this stage of his career.
The supporting cast pulls its weight too. Mona Singh is mostly stuck on phone calls, limited screen time, but every scene she gets, she commands completely. That screen presence is just something else. Then there is Faisal Malik, Prahlad from Panchayat, playing a character called Softy here. Pitch perfect again. One extended scene between him and Mona Singh is an absolute standout in the film.
Small gripe: a film this well-made could have connected even harder in smaller towns where this kind of story really lands. But that is a minor thing on what is otherwise a very strong watch.
Go watch Subedar. Anil Kapoor is doing things most actors half his age cannot pull off.
