The second show I wanted to recommend this week is one I’d been meaning to watch for a while: Creature Commandos. This one’s an animated original from DC Studios, written and produced by none other than James Gunn. And when Gunn’s involved, you know exactly what to expect—quirky storytelling, sharp humor, unfiltered action, and characters who are anything but ordinary.
What’s the Premise?
Think Suicide Squad… but with monsters.
Creature Commandos takes the familiar “team of expendables” formula and twists it with a batch of not-so-human creatures. Amanda Waller is back, pulling the strings as always, and this time around, she’s got a new problem. Due to new government regulations, human lives can’t be risked on missions. Her solution? Use beings who don’t legally qualify as human. Enter the Creature Commandos.
Just like the Suicide Squad, these characters are kept in line by a chip that can cause unbearable pain at the press of a button. So yeah—they follow orders. Not because they want to, but because not doing so really sucks.
What Works?
Plenty.
The humor is spot on—ranging from sharp-witted dialogue to moments of dark, twisted comedy. The violence is graphic and unrelenting, but it never feels pointless. After all, we’re dealing with creatures who don’t value life the same way humans do, and the show leans into that unapologetically.
Each episode (they’re just 20 minutes long!) gives us a glimpse into the backstory of one of these unique characters. The mix of current mission and past trauma is well-balanced, and surprisingly, some of those flashbacks are genuinely emotional. These aren’t just monsters—they’re misunderstood, misjudged, and in some cases, truly tragic.
That emotional layering adds real depth. You want to care about them. And for the most part, you do.
What Doesn’t Work?
The biggest downside? It’s too short.
Just seven episodes. And with that kind of tight runtime, it’s hard to really connect with all the characters the way the show wants you to. Unlike something like The Night Agent (which I’ve critiqued for being a bit too long), Creature Commandos could’ve used more breathing room. More episodes. More time to let us fall for these oddballs before things go sideways.
Standout Characters
The voice cast is stellar, and some characters totally steal the show. My personal favorite?
The Bride, voiced by Indira Varma. You might recognize her from Game of Thrones or Heroes. She’s fantastic here—layered, fierce, and funny. Her dynamic with Frankenstein (yep, that Frankenstein) is one of the show’s most compelling elements.
Other shoutouts go to Dr. Phosphorus and the rest of the squad—each one bizarre, intriguing, and uniquely memorable.
Final Verdict
If you’re into adult animated shows that aren’t afraid to get dark, weird, and a little emotional, Creature Commandos should absolutely be on your watchlist. It’s violent, yes. Funny? For sure. But it’s also got heart—just enough to make you care about the fate of these so-called monsters.
Warning: This is not for kids or family viewing. Despite being animated, the show includes graphic content and mature themes.
But if that’s your jam? Dive in.
