Discworld is an incredible fantasy world created by Terry Pratchett where he has based over 40 books. There are multiple story arcs that run in parallel, intersecting in a subtle manner most of the time.
I started my Discworld journey with the Citywatch arc which focuses on the police force in the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork. The Citywatch books resemble crime thrillers in their setup where the police gets involved to solve a mysterious crime.
Men at Arms is my second book in the Citywatch arc and I loved it from start to end. Just like the first book (Guards! Guards!), Men at Arms has its roots set in adorable characters. The main characters from book 1 all feature here but some great new characters are introduced that took me by surprise.
Humour is the backbone once again and based on what I have read of Pratchett’s style of writing, humour will continue to be a highlight.
I also loved Men at Arms because it is an intriguing mystery that I wanted to get to the bottom of. Yes the writing is submerged in humour so the intensity is not what you expect from a typical thriller, but that’s what makes it so unique.
All the people who look at Discworld and skip it because 40 books is too much, I recommend that you start just 1 arc at a time. Citywatch has got 7 odd books and is a great place to start. A friend gave me this recommendation and It has turned out to be the perfect way to experience the brilliance of Terry Pratchett.
