Best Hindi Films of 2018

filmyfool best hindi films of 2018

Another year comes to an end and for me, this has been the break-out year for small films. As I was compiling my list of best Hindi Films of 2018, I realised that there are no big films featuring in it. No Khans, no big budgets, no multi-starrers. Instead, what I have are 10 films which have great story-telling. Some use the intrinsic qualities of the actor to create memorable moments, others push the actors into alien territory, hence, creating magic.  So here are my best Hindi films of 2018 in no particular order. ...  More

Manmarziyaan Movie Review

Manmarziyaan Abhishek Bachchan Tapsee Pannu

Manmarziyaan continues Anurag Kashyap's 2.0 journey into mainstream Hindi cinema. Though he had a forgettable start to it with Bombay Velvet, I remained optimistic. To be fair, Bombay Velvet was still very much in Kashyap's domain. There was a retro setting, underworld and struggle for power. Those are all the things, Kashyap excels in. When he was not able to deliver a good film with that setting, many would have doubted Kashyap's multi-dimensional ability. However, this time he is experimenting with a completely new genre and seems in a good enough form to prove his point. ...  More

Manmarziyaan Official Trailer

Manmarziyaan Abhishek Bachchan Tapsee Pannu

The official trailer of Manmarziyaan was released today and it looks like a typical love triangle with a twist. The twist comes in the form of Anurag Kashyap who is in the director's chair and you can see his stamp clearly in the trailer. The film stars 'The Next Big Thing' Vicky Kaushal along with Taapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan. Looking at the trailer one thing is clear, Vicky Kaushal is going to DESTROY! ...  More

Sacred Games Trailer

Sacred-Games-600x333

Since the time Netflix announced Sacred Games, there has been a lot of anticipation around it. After all, it stars Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddique, and Radhika Apte. Add to that, the director duo, Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. Anticipating and excitement are automatic with such names behind the project.

“Never before have we seen mainstream actors leaving the big screen for a streaming service. Saif and Nawaz have stepped up and this could well be a game changer for the entire Industry.”

This is not ‘just another show’ from Netflix. There is a lot riding on this apart from money. Netflix did not go the Amazon route and launch the service with a big Indian show like Inside Edge. Thank god for that. Even though the cast of the show was decent, it just was not up to the standards. From production to acting to storyline, it was all very premature. However, with Sacred Games, Netflix may have just waited the right amount of time and based this series on a plethora of data they would have mined from India.

Netflix has started on the right note. The trailer looks stunning with some great production value and intensity of the premise comes through. Let’s hope it delivers and opens the floodgates for many more shows. That may just be the turnaround Indian Television needs.

Gangs of Wasseypur Movie Review – Brilliance Redefined & Cult Allover

wassey

I had spent the past few weeks reading all the rave reviews GOW was getting from Cannes and Sydney. It was selected for the Directors Fortnight at Cannes and got a standing ovation at the Sydney Film Festival. It finally released in India today and the hype surrounding the film is so much that this should turn out to be the biggest commercial success of Anurag Kashyap's career. Let me just congratulate the makers of the film for some excellent promotions especially the team behind the PR of the film. They went all out and made sure that there was Wasseypur everywhere. It is commendable because some people didn't even know that the Shahid Priyanka starrer Teri Meri Kahani was also releasing on the same day. GOW out did Teri Meri Kahani without the presence of any stars whatsoever. Hats Off. ...  More
